The International Seller Services (ISS) mission is to provide technology solutions for improving the seller and customer experience, driving seller compliance, maximizing seller success, and improving internal workforce productivity. The team focuses on building product solutions that scale across regions while partnering with ISS regional stakeholders and partner teams across Amazon. As an Applied Scientist, you will model complex problems, discover insights, and build risk algorithms that identify opportunities via statistical models, machine learning, and visualization techniques to improve operational efficiency.

Responsibilities

• Analyze terabytes of data to deliver complex analytical deep dives and unlock insights, building scalable solutions that ensure the security of Amazon’s platform and transactions.
• Build machine learning and statistical models that evaluate transaction legitimacy and track impact over time.
• Ensure data quality throughout all stages of acquisition and processing, including sourcing, ground‑truth generation, normalization, transformation, and cross‑lingual alignment/mapping.
• Define and conduct experiments to validate or reject hypotheses, and communicate insights and recommendations to product and technology teams.
• Develop efficient data‑querying infrastructure for both offline and online use cases.
• Collaborate with multidisciplinary science, engineering, and business teams to enhance current automation processes.
• Learn and understand a broad range of Amazon’s data resources, knowing when, how, and which to use.
• Maintain technical documentation and communicate results to diverse audiences through effective writing, visualizations, and presentations.
• Extract huge volumes of data from various sources and construct complex analyses.
• Own the customer relationship around data, ensuring high availability, low latency, comprehensive documentation, and user notifications and training.
• Operate distributed machine‑learning and statistical algorithms on a large Hadoop cluster to serve customers at scale.

Basic Qualifications

• 3+ years of building machine‑learning models for business applications.
• PhD or Master’s degree and 6+ years of applied research experience.
• Proficiency in programming with Java, C++, Python or related language.
• Experience with neural deep‑learning methods and machine‑learning techniques.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with modeling tools such as R, scikit‑learn, Spark MLLib, MxNet, TensorFlow, NumPy, SciPy, etc.
• Experience with large‑scale distributed systems such as Hadoop and Spark.
