About Barsento and the Madrid Arena Project

Barsento is the company responsible for the development of a new major multifunctional entertainment, sports and education complex on the site of Madrid’s former Aquatic Centre, adjacent to the Riyadh Air Metropolitano.

The company brings together Live Nation, Oak View Group and Atlético de Madrid in the development of a large-scale project that will include a music-first indoor arena with capacity for more than 20,000 guests .

With an estimated investment of approximately €400 million and a development timeline extending through the end of 2030, the project represents a significant long-term infrastructure development involving multiple shareholders, partners and technical and financial stakeholders.

As the project progresses through its development phases, Barsento is looking to appoint an experienced Financial & Accounting Project Controller to take a key role in ensuring robust financial governance, accounting integrity and effective financial control across the project.

The Role

This is a senior Finance position combining full-cycle accounting ownership with project financial control within a large-scale capital investment environment.

The Financial & Accounting Project Controller will be responsible for ensuring the accuracy, consistency and traceability of the project’s financial information, while overseeing accounting, budgeting, CAPEX and OPEX control, forecasting, cash flow and management reporting.

The role will provide financial insight to support decision-making throughout the development of the project and will work closely with shareholders, project leadership and multidisciplinary teams across finance, development, construction, architecture, legal, procurement, operations and systems.

Given the scale and complexity of the investment, the position requires a professional who is comfortable operating with a high degree of autonomy, financial rigour and accountability, and who can translate technical and contractual developments into their corresponding financial and accounting implications.

This is a specialist Finance / Project Finance position. While the project is being developed within the live entertainment ecosystem, the role is not focused on concert production, event promotion or on-site event delivery. Its scope is specifically financial and accounting, with a strong focus on project investment and development.

Key Responsibilities

Accounting & Financial Close

• Manage and oversee the full accounting cycle for the entities and structures associated with the project, including postings, reconciliations, accruals, provisions, fixed assets, taxes and monthly, quarterly and annual closes.
• Prepare and review financial statements, balance sheets, profit and loss accounts, cash flow statements and supporting financial commentary, ensuring accuracy, consistency and compliance with applicable accounting standards.
• Ensure the appropriate accounting treatment of investments, construction certificates, advance payments, retentions, contracts, supplier invoices and capitalisable costs.
• Maintain the construction-in-progress asset register and ensure the appropriate classification, capitalisation and commissioning of project assets.
• Coordinate internal and external audits and liaise with tax, legal and accounting advisers, ensuring that all required documentation and audit evidence is appropriately maintained.

Project Financial Control

• Develop and maintain the multi-year financial plan for the project and its associated entities, including base, upside and downside scenarios.
• Monitor approved budgets against actual and committed expenditure, identifying variances, underlying causes, financial risks and potential corrective actions.
• Oversee construction and pre-opening CAPEX , together with the OPEX assumptions associated with the future operation of the venue.
• Prepare short-, medium- and long-term cash flow forecasts and monitor project funding requirements.
• Review contracts, change orders, construction certificates, claims and other financial commitments to ensure their appropriate financial and accounting treatment.
• Develop sensitivity, profitability, contingency and financial risk analyses to support management decision-making.

Reporting, Governance & Stakeholder Management

• Prepare periodic project reporting, including financial statements, budget performance, forecasts, cash flow, KPIs and key financial risks.
• Provide robust, accurate and traceable financial information to shareholders, governing bodies, partners, lenders and other relevant stakeholders.
• Work cross-functionally with development, construction, architecture, legal, procurement, operations and systems teams to ensure consistency of financial information and underlying project assumptions.
• Participate in project review meetings and translate technical and contractual developments into their economic, financial and accounting implications.
• Support the implementation and continuous improvement of financial procedures, internal controls, approval workflows and reporting tools to ensure rigorous and scalable project governance.

Candidate Profile

We are looking for an experienced finance professional with a strong accounting foundation and proven exposure to the financial control of complex, capital-intensive projects.

The successful candidate will combine accounting rigour, strong analytical capabilities and commercial judgement , with the ability to operate effectively in a multi-stakeholder and international environment.

Essential Requirements

• University degree in Business Administration, Finance, Economics, Accounting or a related discipline.
• 7–10 years of relevant professional experience in Financial Controller, Accounting Controller, Project Controller or comparable positions.
• Demonstrable experience managing the full accounting cycle , including financial statements and financial closes, with a high degree of autonomy.
• Previous experience in the financial control of construction, real estate, infrastructure, hospitality, venue development or other large-scale capital projects , ideally involving investments in excess of €100 million.
• Strong knowledge of Spanish GAAP.
• Solid experience in CAPEX control, budgeting, forecasting, cash flow management, variance analysis and management reporting .
• Advanced Excel skills and experience working with financial ERP systems.
• Strong analytical and critical-thinking capabilities, with a high level of accuracy and attention to detail.
• Ability to communicate complex financial information clearly to both financial and non-financial stakeholders.
• Strong planning and organisational skills, professional judgement, autonomy and a solution-oriented mindset.

English Language Requirement

A very high level of professional English is essential for this position.

The project operates within an international stakeholder environment and English will be used regularly in meetings, financial documentation, reporting and presentations.

Candidates must therefore be able to work independently and confidently in English, both written and spoken, in a professional finance and business environment .

English proficiency is a core requirement of the role rather than a preferred qualification.

Additional Experience We Value

• Experience in the financial control of major construction or asset-development projects.
• Knowledge of IFRS, consolidation, corporate structures and/or joint ventures.
• Experience with SAP, Oracle, Dynamics or Power BI.
• Familiarity with financial or project-management systems used within construction or real estate environments.
• Experience working within complex shareholder, financing or governance structures.
• Previous exposure to international and multidisciplinary project environments.
