We are looking for an experienced Python Backend Engineer to join a client delivery team working on Search with one of the largest multinational retail companies, primarily known as a supermarket chain.The client operates in multiple countries, including the UK, Ireland, and parts of Europe and Asia, and sells groceries, clothing, electronics, and other consumer goods, both in physical stores and online.
It also offers financial services, mobile phone services, and fuel stations.You will build the backend services behind tools that help Search teams find problems, test changes and measure relevance more quickly, working alongside AI, data and DevOps engineers.Your key responsibilities:Design and build Python backend services and APIs for search quality tooling, including a tool for collecting human relevance judgementsReview and refactor the existing offline evaluation tool so that it can be deployed and run on demand in the CI/CD pipelineTranslate product requirements into well-structured, maintainable, test-driven codeIntegrate services with the shared data platform, existing client APIs and search infrastructureSupport AI and LLM-enabled features alongside AI engineers, including automated checks on accuracy and reliabilityWork with product, design, data science and Search colleagues to turn prototypes into production releasesSupport production systems, resolve incidents, and document decisions and trade-offsHow you'll workShare work early through documentation, demonstrations and incremental pull requestsOwn deliverables within agreed architecture and engineering practices, and communicate decisions, risks and trade-offs clearlyWork closely with Search and data science colleagues to understand how the tools are usedExperiment quickly, test assumptions against real data and iterate using evidenceBalance exploration with delivery, and avoid unnecessary complexity early onDesign for reliability, clarity and adoption by the people who use the toolsMake sensible trade-offs to deliver usable value early, and build solutions that can evolveWhat you'll bring to the role:Strong Python skills, including building maintainable production services and REST APIsExperience reviewing, refactoring and productionising existing code so that it runs reliably in a pipelineGood testing discipline across application and data components, including test-driven developmentUnderstanding of clean design principles such as SOLIDPlatform and deliveryExperience with CI/CD, version control and containerisation, ideally with on-demand or temporary environmentsExperience with a major cloud platform, ideally Microsoft AzureUnderstanding of security, scalability and observability for production servicesData and integrationProficiency with both SQL and NoSQL databasesExperience integrating services with data pipelines, APIs and existing applications AI awarenessExposure to integrating LLM-based or other AI features into backend services, including validation of model outputsQualifications6+ years of professional experience in backend or software engineeringProven ability to ship iterative, user-focused solutions with appropriate attention to reliability and securityStrong written and verbal communication skillsA collaborative approach to multidisciplinary product deliveryNice to haveExperience in retail or ecommerce search, or with Elasticsearch or another production search platformFamiliarity with offline evaluation, A/B testing or ranking metrics such as nDCGExperience with event streaming (for example Kafka) or medallion-style data pipelinesExperience building internal tools for rating or annotationLocation: Spain, flexible remote workYou will receive:The chance to join an organization with triple-digit growth that is changing the paradigm on how software products are built.The opportunity to form part of an amazing, multicultural community of tech experts.A highly competitive compensation package.Medical insurance.Parser is committed to fostering an inclusive workplace and providing equal employment opportunities to all applicants regardless of race, religion, gender, sexual orientation, age, disability, or any other protected characteristic under applicable law.If you require reasonable accommodations during the recruitment process, please let us know and we will work with you to support your participation.By applying to this role, you acknowledge that your personal data will be processed in accordance with Parser's Privacy Notice for recruitment purposes.Parser may use AI-assisted tools during certain stages of the recruitment process to support operational efficiency.
